Which Electric Vans Are Eligible For UK The Plug-In Van Grant?

Electric vans or plug-in electric vans fall under the Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) segment. According to the latest new van registrations figures from the SMMT (August 2022), year-to-date 178,626 LCV’s have been registered in the United Kingdom. Pure electric LCV’s account for 5.4% of the market, up 50.6% compared to the same period in the previous year. It is also worth noting that diesel LCV’s are down by 27% in the same period. Year-to-date in 2022, a total of 9,809 BEV LCV’s have been registered. We at e-zoomed expect this momentum to continue to increase momentum, as we migrate to electric driving across the country.

Moreover, post Covid-19 we expect to see ‘clean air zones’ become a priority for cities across the United Kingdom, such that, tailpipe emission commercial vans will be banned from the city centres with an objective of improving air quality. Put another way, we expect only zero-emission electric vans to be allowed in city centres. November 2020 also saw the extension of the ULEZ zone in London, a step towards improving air quality in London.

Both small electric vans and large electric vans qualify for the UK government plug-in grant. Small vans are vehicles that are less than 2,500 kilograms (kg) gross vehicle weight and have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km and can travel at least 96km (60 miles) without any emissions at all. Large vans are vehicles between 2,500kg and 4,250kg gross vehicle weight, have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km and can travel at least 96km (60 miles) without any emissions at all.

For small e-vans the grant will pay for 35% of the purchase price for small vans, up to a maximum of £2,500. For larger electric vans, the grant will pay for 35% of the purchase price for these vehicles, up to a maximum of £5,000. A company can claim a total of 1000 plug-in van and truck grants each year. This limit resets every year on 1 April.
